”…When the roll is called up yonder I’ll be there…”

Pastors Testimony (Dan Hornby) I was born and raised on a farm just outside Tillsonburg, Ontario until I left for Toronto to attend George Brown College in 1983.

In the year 1998 there came a point in my life that I had been convinced of the fact that I was a sinner. The guilt and shame drove me to seek countless ways of dealing with it including drugs, alcohol, therapists…you name it, I tried it. Things came to a head when I was so miserable and depressed I began to consider taking my own life as a solution. The fear of death drove me to seek God and so I wound up attending church services with friends and family.

In the early part of 1999 I attended a church in Toronto where I heard the gospel of Jesus Christ preached. Within a few months I believed the gospel and accepted Jesus Christ as my Saviour, Lord and God and as the song goes “…I remember when my burdens rolled away…” Praise God for his mercy, grace and gift of salvation!

It was at this church where I met my wife Eden and was married in December of 2001. We have 3 beautiful children, Gillian, Titus and Ethan.

During the year 2016 I was preaching the gospel on the streets, in churches, homes and every Sunday in the recreation room of the apartment complex at 17 Brimley Road. It was the summer of 2019 that the work at Brimley was recognized to be a Church that Christ was building.

MESSAGES FROM THE PAST

If a man or woman comes into the church with a salvation testimony sounding like this, “I repented of MY SINS and believed on Jesus Christ” or “I repented of ALL MY SINS and believed on Jesus Christ” or “I turned from MY WICKED WAYS and believed on Jesus Christ”, reprove that person and teach them with the word of God that Jesus and the Apostles did not command LOST SINNERS to repent of their SINS or ALL OF THEIR SINS to be saved. Jesus and the Apostles made it absolutely clear that there is only one sin a lost sinner must repent of and that is unbelief. Anything a lost sinner adds to God’s grace is filthy rags.

Consider the words of Christ in John 16: 8,9: “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE NOT ON ME;” Notice its ONE sin, the sin of unbelief. Consider the question and answer that was asked of Jesus in John 6:28,29: “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” Lost religious men want to add their own self righteousness to God’s gift of salvation, it does not work that way with God. Don’t let the fact that Jesus described belief in Him as a work trip you up, it is a beautiful and wonderful work that Jesus did on the cross for you and me. Oh the wisdom of God is too high for us, study this more and God give you more knowledge and understanding!

Consider also what the Holy Spirit says in Titus 3:5: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” Any work that is added to the one work that Jesus commanded lost sinners to do is WORKS SALVATION. Jesus did not command lost sinners to REPENT OF SOME, A FEW, ALL….SINS to be saved, he said ONE. The command to repent of ALL YOUR SINS is a commandment to the believers which can be found in John 14:15, Paul’s Epistles to the church and Revelation 2,3. So there is no confusion or cause for accusation, the saints can confess their sins and be cleansed of all unrighteousness according to 1 John 1:9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Consider the examples of two men’s salvation testimonies given by the Lord Jesus in Luke 18:9-14: “And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.”

Search the scriptures with a humble heart and you will see that these things are true.

MORE ABOUT REPENTANCE

REPENT means to change or turn. Inwardly to change ones mind and heart. Outwardly to change ones behaviour, actions, words, deeds. David Cloud, the famous Baptist Teacher, teaches this also but adds another definition as well in his book “Way of Life Encyclopedia…5th Edition.” He teaches that repent means godly sorrow for sin. These two definitions are polar opposite to one another. Taking one definition over the other completely changes the meaning of the word repent and therein lies the problem. One definition implies salvation by works of righteousness while the other definition implies salvation by grace through faith alone. What’s your definition of repent?

The King James Bible DOES NOT teach that repent means to feel sorrow or grief for sin. Sorrow means sorrow, not repentance and God has accounted for the sinners sorrow without confusing it with repentance, 2 Cor 7:10. Its a sorrow that comes with being condemned by the law and lost sinners must hear the law so they can be convicted of sin. Given the BIBLICAL definition of repentance, telling lost people they need to “repent of their sins to be saved” is a false gospel, a salvation by works based on the BIBLICAL definition! The commandments to repent of your sins is Christ’s commandments to the saints (John 14:15, Paul’s Epistles, Rev 2,3) for the purpose of growing in grace and perfection, not to the lost for salvation. God also commands both Jew and Gentile in the Old Testament to repent of their sins to avoid physical destruction. But you will be hard pressed to find the command “repent of your sins for salvation/eternal life.”

At this present time the lost hear the gospel: Rom 7:10, the law declares them dead in trespasses and sin: Rom 3:10, they have godly sorrow: 2 Cor 7:10, they hear Christ died for sinners and the goodness of God which leads to repentance: Rom 2:4, they repent towards God and have faith in Jesus Christ: Acts 20:21. The acknowledgment and sorrow for sin takes place when they are condemned by the law and the punishment that awaits them. The repentance for lost sinners coming to Christ is from UNBELIEF to BELIEF, FAITH in Jesus Christ. Rejecting Jesus Christ sends sinners to hell: “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts 2:38

“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” Mark 1:15

I can hear it now, “your such a nit picker, so discouraging”…maybe a few curse words thrown in for good measure. If one studies this with an honest heart, no room for pride, one will see that “repent of your sins to be saved” or “turn from your sins to be saved” is not God’s commandment based on the definition that repent means “change”. Have you seriously studied the matter for your self? What is your definition of repentance and how did you come to that definition? It did not come from the King James Bible.

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” Acts 17:11

After thoughts:

Someone read this message and asked: but what about Acts 3;19? “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;”

What are they being commanded to repent of? They denied Jesus and took a murderer in v. 14. They did it in ignorance in v. 17.

Their SINS, ALL OF THEM, are going to be blotted out because they went from denying Jesus to receiving Jesus, repented, changed their mind. They changed their mind and if it was with the heart they got saved right there and then without repenting of ALL THEIR SINS.

If lost sinners had to “repent of sins to be saved” its no wonder they think salvation can be lost and/or its no wonder they act like they are above reproach and are unable to confess their sins, especially pride, hypocrisy and sins in the heart.

REPENT of this sin, this preaching and teaching a false gospel!

THE HERESY OF: January 31, 2021

Loosing The Gift of Salvation

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (John 11:26)

I want to start by stating the obvious and that is a saved child of God who has received God’s gift of salvation by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ can NEVER loose it! Sadly there are people around claiming to be Christians saying that a Christian can loose their salvation.

The Bible says in1 John 5:1&4 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that OVERCOMETH the world, even our FAITH.

The over-comers are those who are IN the OVERCOMER and that’s Jesus. Consider how the children of God get peace in Jesus, by FAITH in Jesus, John 16:3 says These things I have spoken unto you, that IN ME ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I HAVE OVERCOME the world.”
Jesus has overcome the world and only in Jesus are the children of God over-comers.

Those teaching a child of God can loose their salvation are confused or liars. They are using scripture directed at unbelievers and applying them to believers and in some cases overthrowing the faith of some. The devil is the accuser of the brethren, not the Holy Spirit. In 2 Timothy 2 there is an example of two men “Who concerning the truth have erred…and overthrow the faith of some”. We who know and defend the truth of the word of God are not deceived and we are to admonish them twice and reject them if they don’t repent.

The people who teach this heresy don’t consider the fact that there are people in the local churches that are not born again and many have a profession and doing works: read Matthew 7:21-23 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. Teaching a child of God they can loose God’s gift of salvation is heresy, Titus 3:10, and those teaching it must be rebuked to the fullest extent possible, without sinning of course!

Beware of those using the wording: you have to “repent of your sins to be saved” and they teach “repent of your sins” to stay saved. I have been warning the brethren for years that this wording and how it is used is confusing the doctrine of salvation by grace and making it appear that salvation is by works. Ephesians 2:8&9 makes it abundantly clear For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. See, they are boasters by implying they are sinless, yet they say they are not perfect, they have faults but they give themselves a pass, its disgusting. Their doctrine does not match their deeds, hypocrites.

The most recent example was a gospel trac that read as follows: “Those that repent of their sins toward God, and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation, will partake in that Kingdom.” Now read Acts 20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Looks like adding to the word of God to me! I can hear it now, Hey brother Dan, don’t you believe in repentance? Yes I believe in repentance, I just don’t believe in corrupting the word of God so you can teach a works salvation. Beware of the warning in Revelation 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book.

Beware of those teachers who do not believe we have the inspired/preserved word of God. Get yourself a King James Bible. Psalms 33:4 says For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth. Psalms 12 says The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Ecc 8:4 says Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?

Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and all that believe on him are saved.

And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? (John 11:26)

A PERFECT MAN (January 24, 2021)

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. (James 3:2)

Striving for perfection is good and right but what profit is there if you forget who the perfect man is or what good is learning so much and never coming to the truth?

Men are spending loads of time, and OUR money, conducting scientific experiments and research to find out the “Origins of Life” only to reject the One who gives life. Through wicked and vain imaginations, not to mention pride, they come up with conclusions you find used in science FICTION movies. Do some research on Ron L Hubbard the founder of the Church of Scientology. It also has to be said that Christians are spending a lot of time, and the SAINT’S money, privately interpreting scripture. Do some research on Apologetics.

A humble and honest person will come to the conclusion that Jesus Christ of the Bible is the perfect man, the truth and the One who gives life.

Christians are commanded to be slow to speak and bridle the tongue. However, even if you have been successful Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 “But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” Even if you have not committed the act, the thought going to the heart is a sin. Keeping it in the heart keeps it between you and the Lord. For those who have bridled the tongue, good for you, but don’t look down on those who have not got that far in their walk to perfection. Don’t use a brothers fall as an opportunity to lift yourself up. Take the opportunity to lift up Jesus Christ. And don’t forget, parents are commanded not to provoke their children, Pastors and church leaders don’t provoke the Saints with your hypocrisy.

Do you want to be perfect? The best way I know how is to get saved and confess your sins daily as they come up. If that’s over simplifying the matter, have some grace and search the scriptures. The Bible says ”…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…” Acts 16:31 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” 1 John 1:8

FREEDOM IN KNOWING THE TRUTH (Jan 17, 2021)

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:31-32)

The most liberating event a person could ever have is coming to the knowledge of the fact that he or she is a sinner and calling upon the Lord Jesus Christ to have their sins forgiven.

We hear a great deal in the media today about political unrest and the battle between the Republicans and the Democrats in the United States. Claims are being made that politicians cannot do the right thing because they are being held hostage by individuals or groups that may have “DIRT” on them.

If you had the blessing of growing up with brothers and sisters around, more than likely you experienced this kind of behavior. Do you remember hearing or saying to your sibling: “I’ll tell Dad or Mom you did such and such if you don’t give me what I want.” All the time right? That seemingly innocent game children play is called extortion. As Webster’s Dictionary puts it: EXTOR’TION, n. The act of extorting; the act or practice of wresting any thing from a person by force ,duress, menaces, authority, or by any undue exercise of power; illegal exaction; illegal compulsion to pay money, or to do some other act. Extortion is an offense punishable at common law.

When children go door to door on Halloween and say: “trick or treat.” that’s extortion. Wow, I never thought of it that way! Well you better think about it because God has something to say about it in Isaiah 16:4 Let mine outcasts dwell with thee, Moab; be thou a covert to them from the face of the spoiler: for the extortioner is at an end, the spoiler ceaseth, the oppressors are consumed out of the land. And in 1 Corinthians 5:11: But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

Those who are oppressed by extortioners have a way of escape, his name is JESUS. The bible says in Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Salvation through Jesus Christ is not a matter of God eliminating your enemies in order to keep your sins hidden but to forgive your sins that you may be free from the guilt and shame and know you are right with God. After getting right with God saved men and women tend to get right with man and accept any fallout from sins of the past. As for the oppressors God will deal with them according to Romans 12:9 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

A saved child of God is not afraid of what man says about them, they know they were sinners and in fact only sinners qualify for the gift of God which is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus said in John 38: 31-32 If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. The Lord also said he will give you rest if you come to him.

So lets pray for the oppressed and lets go out and tell them the good news according to Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. And also in 2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
